Monthly report: Buffalo Dam schedule, invasive removal and volunteer projects highlighted

Morgan Kepler, representing Marquette County Land & Water Conservation staff, gave the committee's monthly report on Jan. 12.
Kepler said Buffalo Dam Lock Chamber construction is scheduled for late 2026. He reported that "Pat" has been attending pre-design and bid meetings and has commented on plan elements affecting the county-managed portion of Krakow. Kepler also described ongoing invasive-species removal and brushing at Krakow (along the embankment), Lower Locks and Muir.
The report noted volunteer and training activity: High Marq students held a field day with staff to clean the natural playground and remove invasives at Muir; Matt attended chainsaw-use training with the Highway Department and trees along Lower Locks Road were used as specimen material for that training. Kepler said three bat houses donated by an Eagle Scout will be placed at county-owned parks.
Kepler also reported routine winterizing and closures of county properties: bathrooms were pumped and locked, barricades and snowplow markers placed, and docks removed from lakes for the season. The committee reviewed expenses for October through December 2026. Kathleen McGwin attempted to give an update on the Muir Historical Route app but connection issues prevented the presentation.
