Moody City Council approves personnel moves, training expenses and maintenance items

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the Moody City Council unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing Human Trafficking Awareness Month, promoted a detective to sergeant, approved several police training and travel expenses, authorized advertising to fill part-time officer positions, purchased additional AXON body-camera storage and approved a City Hall heating repair.
Moody City Council met Jan. 13, 2025, and unanimously approved a set of personnel and administrative measures affecting the city’s public safety and facilities.
Mayor Joe Lee called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m.; roll call recorded Council Member Matt Morris as absent. The council first approved its published agenda and the minutes from the Dec. 9, 2024 meeting by unanimous voice votes.
The council adopted a proclamation presented by Mayor Lee recognizing January 2025 as Alabama’s Human Trafficking Awareness Month. Council Member Linda Crowe moved adoption and Council Member Ellis Key seconded; all present voted aye.
Chief Reece Smith of the Moody Police Department sought and received approval for several personnel and training items. The council approved the promotion of Detective Justin Crump to sergeant (budgeted to account 1-513-0101). The body also approved lodging and expenses for Smith and Lt. Humber to attend the winter chiefs training in Montgomery, not to exceed $850 (Feb. 10–13), and lodging and expenses for K-9 Officer Chapple to attend annual K-9 training in Dothan, not to exceed $760 (Feb. 2–7). Each of those items was moved and seconded and passed by unanimous vote of members present.
The council authorized staff to advertise and hire for open part-time flex police officer positions (budgeted 1-513-0101); minutes note Andrew Praytor filled the last full-time opening and that David Weal recently resigned a part-time post. The council also approved a $1,141.18 purchase for annual AXON cloud storage for police body-camera data (budgeted 1-513-3000).
Parks and Recreation presented and the council recognized Neilson Holt as the city’s new park manager. Separately, Mayor Lee requested and the council approved a City Hall heating-unit repair from Tri-County Heating at a cost of $1,040.95 (charged to City Hall Maintenance 01-522-2504). Mayor Lee moved to adjourn the meeting at 6:10 p.m.; the motion carried and the minutes were later attested.
