Canton board approves River Fest co-sponsorship, waives water bill and schedules Merchant Partnerships request

The Canton Mayor and Board of Aldermen/women on Feb. 26 approved a co-sponsorship request from the Pigeon River Garden Club for a River Fest to be held Aug. 22, 2026. Town Clerk Sam Dunbar presented the request, which sought use of recreation park areas, the boat ramp and adjacent field, social media promotion, and traffic cones for parking. Alderwoman Mull moved to approve the co-sponsorship, Alderman Hamlett seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
Manager Stinnett asked the board to waive a water bill after the property owner passed away and a pipe burst caused charges. Alderwoman Mull moved to waive the bill; Alderman Hamlett seconded and all voted in favor. The minutes do not specify the dollar amount of the bill.
Resident Hannah Burnsiky asked whether a Canton Merchant Partnerships "Mill around Town" event would be discussed; Clerk Dunbar said he had omitted it from the agenda in error and Manager Stinnett said she needed to review the request. Mayor Zeb Smathers moved the item to Old Business for the March 12, 2026 meeting.
Earlier in the meeting Police Chief Sluder thanked the street department for help during a recent snowstorm and Fire Chief Wheeler noted the department had received a new rescue boat. Those remarks were presented as informational updates and no emergency-policy actions were taken.
The board handled the items by motion and vote during the meeting, then entered closed session later in the evening and adjourned at 8:16 p.m.
