Garvey Board approves contracts, settlements and instructional-materials resolution

At its Oct. 10 meeting the Garvey Board of Education approved a broad set of consent and action items covering procurement, facilities work, notices of completion and settlements.
The Board approved the consent agenda on a 5-0 vote, which included: a CMAS piggyback purchase of approximately 2,600 Chromebooks (2,000 ASUS for school use and 600 Dell for take-home) for a total of $944,468.40 paid from Bond Funds; amendments to AMS.NET contracts for districtwide phone modernization and public-address systems (combined contract increases described in the agenda); and multiple construction and professional services contracts and notices of completion for modular classrooms, electrical work and playground installation across district sites.
Notable individual contract approvals reported in the minutes include roofing replacement at Bitely Child Development Program for $77,820 (Head Start/State Preschool funds); a $1,280,000 contract with Hart Design Build Inc. for excavating and grading a northeastern hillside slope at Hillcrest Elementary (paid from FEMA reimbursements and Bond Funds); engineering and architectural services for Emerson and Monterey Vista schools; and a contract authorization for mesh fence banners at Emerson for $73,108.73 (Bond Funds).
Under action items the Board opened and immediately closed a public hearing on sufficiency of instructional materials for 2024–25 and adopted Resolution No. 24-25-07 (Education Code §60119) verifying the district’s compliance, carried 5-0. The Board also approved Amendment #6 to a joint-use agreement with the Los Angeles Community College District for classroom lease at the Williams Education Center (monthly lease fee $14,135) and accepted multiple notices of completion for recent projects.
The Board reported a closed-session settlement in which a certificated employee resigned under a settlement agreement approved unanimously; later the Board approved a Final Settlement and Release Agreement for Office of Administrative Hearing Case No. 2024070136 for $24,000 to be paid from Special Education Program Funds, voted 5-0.
Trustee Andrew Yam requested review of the board’s rationale process for Community School-related items; Board President Bobbi Bruesch noted that the November meeting will be her last after decades of service.
