Garvey Board elects Andrew Yam president, honors outgoing chair Paul Duran

The Garvey Board of Education honored outgoing Board President Paul Duran and elected new officers during its Dec. 11 regular meeting in Rosemead.
Board members and Superintendent Anita Chu praised Duran's leadership and presented him with a plaque recognizing his service. John Nunez, Ronald Trabanino, Maureen Chin and Andrew Yam each offered remarks highlighting Duran's facilitation at meetings and support during challenging moments.
Nominations opened for board officers. John Nunez nominated Andrew Yam for president; Yam accepted. On a motion by Ronald Trabanino, seconded by Maureen Chin, the board elected Andrew Yam president by a 5-0 vote. The board elected Ronald Trabanino as vice president and Maureen Chin as clerk by unanimous votes. The board also appointed Superintendent Anita Chu as secretary to the board (5-0).
Ryan Liu, speaking on behalf of the Pasadena City College Board of Trustees, presented certificates to outgoing and incoming officers and emphasized partnership between the college and the district. The meeting recessed briefly for refreshments and reconvened for the evening's business.
The leadership changes take effect as recorded in the board minutes; the board also noted upcoming district events and holiday activities where the new slate will appear.
The board adjourned at 9:58 p.m.; its next regular meetings are scheduled for Jan. 8 and Jan. 29, 2026.
