Council accepts $6,597 youth sports grant for Northside Park fields; staff to seek additional funding

The Newton City Council on July 15 accepted a $6,597 grant from NC Amateur Sports to support upgrades to the Northside Park fields used by the citys youth soccer leagues.
Parks and Recreation Assistant Director Carol Stiles told the council that NC Amateur Sports offered up to $20,000 per county for state fiscal year 202425 and up to $10,000 per county for subsequent years. For this cycle Catawba County had $13,914 remaining; Newton applied and was awarded $6,597 on May 30, 2025. Stiles said while the award will help improve the fields, additional funding will be necessary to complete planned upgrades, and staff will continue seeking supplementary sources.
Council approved acceptance of the grant unanimously in the minutes.
