Newton approves two-year code enforcement contract with Western Piedmont COG

Council approved a 24-month contract with the Western Piedmont Council of Governments to provide comprehensive code enforcement services at a cost of $178,000 covering salary, benefits, fuel, technology and training beginning July 1, 2025.
Police Chief Vidal Sipe said Newton's contract with the Western Piedmont Council of Governments (WPCOG) for code enforcement will expire June 30, 2025, and the city anticipates the retirement of its lone code enforcement officer on April 1. Chief Sipe recommended entering a new 24-month contract with WPCOG to provide complete code enforcement services beginning July 1, 2025.
Chief Sipe told council WPCOG had opened numerous cases during the initial contract, handling overgrown properties, nuisance vehicles, illegal dumping and junk accumulation. The proposed 24-month contract totals $178,000 and covers salary, benefits, fuel, uniforms, technology and training. Council voted unanimously to approve the contract.
Staff said WPCOG would begin full code enforcement activities immediately under the contract and the city will monitor outcomes and workload.
