Developer outlines plan for market-rate housing, restaurant in downtown Newton

Roger Young, president of Looper Construction, told Newton City Council Jan. 7 that his firm is pursuing redevelopment of the Corriher property downtown and is considering a project of about 102 apartment units alongside a 5,200-square-foot restaurant by Backstreets through Bryan Norris.
Young said the project would focus on one- and two-bedroom units with a small number of three-bedrooms and include amenities such as a community courtyard, secure fob access, on-site fitness and management, bike storage, coworking space and valet trash. He described the development as intended to attract younger residents who may remain in Newton as they start families. Young estimated the project would create around 50 jobs related to the project overall and 4–5 on-site positions.
Mayor Jerry Hodge and council members thanked Young for presenting the concept. Young said the goal is to fit the development into Newton’s existing downtown character, not to change it.
