Council hears presentations on pavement management, trails land acquisition grant and stream rehab program

At the Feb. 3 meeting city councilors received three informational presentations. Steve Lander, P.E., of Pavement Navigators gave a short briefing on pavement-system management and the condition and maintenance needs of Newton’s roadway network. Lander outlined system-condition measurement and recommended maintenance practices.
Tom Kenney, Director of Land Protection at Foothills Conservancy of North Carolina, presented a PowerPoint describing a land-acquisition and trails project and a potential grant opportunity through NC Complete the Trails to support trails and conservation priorities. Kenney described how the grant could support acquisition and trail construction that connects local open-space assets.
Randy Willis presented the Stream Rehabilitation Assistance Program (STRAP), describing technical assistance and funding that can help restore drainage ways such as Jacob Fork and work in Southside Park. Willis emphasized program eligibility and the potential for an eligible grantee to receive assistance to protect drainage integrity.
Council received the information; no formal votes on these presentations were recorded in the minutes.
