On Dec. 21 the board interviewed three candidates — Jimmy Collins, Corey Neal and Kelly Williams — in a special meeting called for sheriff selection. After discussion the board voted to appoint Kelly Williams to the McPherson County Sheriff post for a four‑year term effective Jan. 3, 2019; the motion included the condition that if Williams failed to accept, the offer would be extended to Corey Neal.
In the interim the board appointed Deputy Tom Burch as interim sheriff to serve starting Nov. 1, 2018 until a permanent replacement was elected or appointed. The board published timelines for applications and scheduled a special meeting to conduct interviews and consider appointment of a permanent sheriff.
