McPherson County commissioners adopted the fiscal year 2021–22 budget after holding the statutorily required public hearings on Sept. 15, 2021.
The board set the county’s final property tax request at $761,272.59 — $100,041.61 less than the 2020 figure — and adopted Resolution #2021‑21 (Adoption and Appropriations) and Resolution #2021‑22 (Property Tax Request). Chairman Brett Nason presented an overview of the proposed budget at the public hearing; no members of the public attended either the special hearing or the subsequent budget hearing to offer comment.
The board and staff reviewed revenue and expenditure lines during budget workshops held in August and September and contracted Caleb Johnson to prepare budget documents and filings with the State Auditor’s office under a two‑year agreement. County Clerk Kathy Hoberg made budget copies available in the courtroom during hearings, as required by statute.
Commissioners noted the change in the county’s overall operating budget and the resulting levy rates certified later by the Board of Equalization. On Oct. 13 the Board of Equalization adopted the county’s levy schedule, setting the combined county rate at 0.238804 per $100 of assessed value; the combined county plus fire district rate was certified at 0.246483.
The board also approved a three‑year audit engagement with Donald D. Wilson, CPA, and signed routine claims and financial reports throughout the year as part of budget management. Commissioner Jeffrey Arensdorf said routine fiscal oversight and conservative budgeting helped reduce the county’s tax request this year.
The budget adoption sets appropriations for county operations and capital projects, including road work and equipment purchases noted elsewhere in the 2021 proceedings. The board will monitor revenues and may adjust planned capital work based on grant funding and material costs.
