Vice Chairman John Bryant called the Jan. 9 annual statutory meeting of the McPherson County Board of Commissioners to order and the board completed its yearly organizational business, including the appointment of officers and committee assignments. Commissioners Carl Rundback and Brett Nason, and Bryant took actions to fill standing roles and committees for the year.
The board approved a pay resolution for road employees. Resolution #2019-1 increased road workers’ wages by $0.45 per hour while maintaining the existing pay scale for those with less than two years’ county employment; the motion passed unanimously. The board also raised hourly equipment charge rates, setting patrol and wheel-loader operator rates at $185 per hour and the John Deere tractor operator rate at $100 per hour.
As part of the organizational business the board reappointed Tom Werblow as McPherson County Highway Superintendent for 2019 under Resolution #2019-4 at an annual salary of $9,000 with no benefits. The board adopted the January road plan and scheduled the One-and-Six Year Road Plan hearing for Feb. 13. The meeting record shows routine approvals of minutes and the designation of the Stapleton Enterprise as the official county newspaper for 2019.
The board’s actions in January set the procedural and financial groundwork for the county’s road program for the year; next substantive steps included the scheduled One-and-Six Year Road Plan hearing and the monthly road-plan approvals that followed.
