Fire and sheriff officials ask council to review mutual-aid agreements as sheriff announces $140,000 vehicle grant

During the public-safety portion of the meeting, volunteer fire staff (S5) reported the department finally received ISO paperwork and described recent training exercises with neighboring Fallon crews. The volunteer representative said training focused on shoveling, pulling holes and search-and-rescue tasks given limited personnel.

Sheriff Lewis (S2) described research findings and a historical concern: he said records showed a past interstate fire response where the county and state later billed the locality because no mutual-aid agreement documented voluntary response. "We ended up sending us a bill because we didn't technically have a mutual agreement that showed any voluntary value," S2 said, emphasizing the need to review interlocal agreements to reduce future billing risk.

Sheriff Lewis also delivered his monthly statistics: the transcript records 47 office visits in January, 295 calls to his cell in January, 92 calls for service and seven cases filed (including trespass, DUI, two accidents, a vicious dog complaint and a privacy-communication case). He said the department received notification of a vehicle grant totaling $140,000 to buy two new vehicles; the vehicles were ordered and expected to arrive by about May.

Council directed staff to examine interlocal agreements and mutual-aid language so the town understands the scope of coverage and possible liabilities. No formal council action was recorded on agreements at the meeting.
