Tuscaloosa County Schools board approves contracts, policy changes and accepts Career Tech director's retirement

The Tuscaloosa County Schools Board of Education met in a called session on Feb. 19, 2026, and unanimously approved a slate of contracts, purchases and policy updates and accepted the retirement of the district's Career Technical Education director.
The board approved a Practical Field Experience Site Agreement with the University of Alabama to host College of Education students for course-credit placements; the motion to approve was made by Bill Squires and seconded by Lance Bailey. The board also approved a $53,689 purchase of HVAC equipment for the Duncanville Middle School gym from Trane through the OMNIA Cooperative Program (to be paid from the FY26 Maintenance Budget) and a $94,825 purchase agreement between Federal Programs and KIDS FIRST Education Services to be paid with Federal Title II funds.
Board members approved two deductive change orders totaling $7,315.78: $2,315.78 from B. G. Watkins Construction Company for the Brookwood High School Career Tech Annex roll-up door and $5,000 each in deducts related to press box fit-outs at Sipsey Valley High School (one mechanical package from Hughes and Mullenix and one electrical package from Taylor Electrical). The board also approved two recycling quotes for previously surplused technology—SecondLifeMac ($36,665) and TotalTechnology ($27,955)—and renewed the district's Apple Self-Service Center contract for another year.
Under policy actions, the board adopted the revised Technology Acceptable Use Policy (5.90) and approved a Standard Student Data Privacy Agreement with Rethink Autism. Interim Chief School Financial Officer Tina Bolt presented financial statements reconciled through Jan. 31, 2026, which the board approved. The board also approved consent agenda items A–W as presented; the minutes do not itemize those consent entries.
In personnel business, Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources Dr. Allison Mays presented the human resources report. The board approved the Certified/Classified and Administrative portions of that report and accepted the retirement of Mr. Dennis Duncan, director of Career Technical Education, effective April 1, 2026.
During special presentations the board recognized Terri Brewer, director of public relations for Tuscaloosa County Schools, who received the Alabama School Communicator of the Year Award. The board also noted that February is National Career Technical Education Month and heard that 68.6 percent of Tuscaloosa County Schools students are enrolled in career technical education courses; the Tuscaloosa County Commission issued a proclamation recognizing the month.
All motions during the called meeting were approved unanimously. With no further business, the board adjourned at 11:20 a.m.
