Nelson County approves 2023 budget, buys John Deere backhoe and hires KLJ for bridge work

The Nelson County Board of Commissioners on Oct. 10 approved a set of budget, equipment and contracting decisions that the board said were needed to keep county operations moving into 2023.
Chairman Nancy Marquart opened the budget hearing at 11:00 a.m., and Nelson County Auditor Jenny Wigen presented updated 2023 budget spreadsheets. Commissioner Cody Johnson moved and Commissioner Don Fougner seconded a motion to accept and approve the 2023 budgets; the motion passed on a roll-call vote with all members voting “Yes.”
Earlier in the meeting, Seth Hamre presented three bids for a new backhoe. Commissioner Johnson moved and Commissioner Steve Forde seconded a motion to purchase a John Deere backhoe from RDO for $135,316.99; on a roll-call vote all members voted “Yes.”
The board voted to hire KLJ to complete engineering design work for the removal of the Quanbeck Bridge south of McVille and the replacement of the Flaagan Bridge southwest of Tolna. The commission also approved payment of bills listed on the agenda and approved a set of tax abatements presented by Michelle Linstad.
The board approved signing a grant to receive $3,600 from the ND DOT Statewide Law Enforcement Overtime Program. Angela Herda informed the board Nelson County will receive a separate Homeland Security Safety Grant for $52,000; the City of Lakota was identified as receiving a $30,000 grant.
During the auditor hiring process the commission voted to authorize temporary pay increases: Robyn Ward will receive an additional $440.00 per week and Lori Schuh an additional $110.00 per week while the county completes hiring for the auditor position. With no further business, the board adjourned at 3:15 p.m.
