During the public-comment portion of the Feb. 24 meeting, several South Sumter residents asked Sumter County Council to act on perceived industrial and salvage-related impacts.
Freddie Bennett told council he has observed rats and other nuisance conditions he believes are linked to a nearby industrial operation and asked that the county investigate. Rev. Maron Newton, senior pastor of Jehovah Missionary Baptist Church, said the Board of Zoning approved a service yard and asked that the decision‑making process be reviewed. Sandra Burgess and Tony Williams both urged that industrial-type uses not be expanded in South Sumter and advocated instead for redevelopment and economic investment that protects property values. Gwendolyn China raised concerns about potential public‑health and environmental effects related to salvage activity, and Mary/Barry Fleming asked the council to take stronger action to address junkyard-related blight, safety and quality‑of‑life concerns.
The minutes record these comments as formal public input; the meeting record does not show council taking immediate enforcement or directive action in response. The speakers requested follow-up and investigation by county staff or relevant authorities.
