Bay Minette tables Old City Hotel unsafe-structure decision until Jan. 18 pending engineer report

Mayor Robert A. Wills opened a public hearing Nov. 15 on code-enforcement Case No. CE-21073 concerning the Old City Hotel at 10 Hand Avenue in Bay Minette. Building Official Rob Madison presented the city's inspection findings and summarized enforcement steps taken to date.
Property representatives Peggy Middleton and Hamilton Weatherford asked the council for additional time to obtain a structural-engineer inspection and to update design plans for the property. Middleton specifically requested that the owners be allowed time to produce a structural engineer's letter regarding the building's soundness and revised design documents.
After discussion, Councilmember Mike Phillips moved to table the matter until the Jan. 18, 2022 council meeting on the condition that the owners present a letter from a structural engineer attesting to the building's structural soundness; if such documentation is not provided the council directed the property be declared a nuisance. Councilmember Shannon Clemmons seconded the motion, and the council voted unanimously to table the case.
Next steps: the council will revisit Case No. CE-21073 at its Jan. 18, 2022 meeting. If the structural-engineer letter and updated plans are not provided by that date, the council's stated condition allows it to proceed with nuisance declaration and further enforcement.
