Grant County commissioners deny two large-truck permit requests, approve bills and new deputy hire

The Grant County Commissioners on Feb. 18 denied two applications for 129,000‑pound Large Truck Network segments and approved routine county business, including bills and a deputy hire.
Commissioners cited concerns that the county’s current road infrastructure is at capacity when they voted unanimously to deny applications from Roehl Transfer Inc. and from applicant Kurt Muggli. Commissioner Marty Meyer moved to deny the Roehl Transfer application and the board voted aye (Meyer, Al Roy Hochhalter and Chairman Alton Zenker). The board took the same action on Muggli’s application, also passing the denial unanimously.
The board approved bills totaling $39,267.98, a consent‑agenda style vote that covered payments to vendors including CHS Inc., Sidwell Company, GS Publishing LLC and others. Commissioner Meyer moved to approve the bills; Commissioner Hochhalter seconded and the motion passed on a unanimous roll call.
On personnel matters, Sheriff Dillon announced that Jessa Sauter has accepted a deputy position with Grant County and will begin employment Feb. 23, 2026, at a starting annual salary of $45,000; the board approved the hire unanimously on a motion by Hochhalter and second by Meyer.
Other actions included entering a funding agreement with the North Dakota Supreme Court for the 2027–2029 biennium to receive reimbursement for providing clerk services, approval of a building permit variance for a barn replacement (permit BLD‑2026‑004), and approval of a utility permit for WRT to install fiberoptic cable to 5849 61 Ave SW. In each case, motions were recorded and approved by unanimous roll call.
The board also voted to decrease agricultural valuation inputs by 4.25 percent for 2026 to keep county values within tolerance levels set by the State Board of Equalization. Jackie Steinmetz presented the valuation change; the board approved the decrease on a motion by Al Roy Hochhalter, seconded by Meyer.
The meeting closed with a brief discussion of road and equipment repairs and a reminder of upcoming meetings on March 4 and March 18, 2026. Chairman Zenker adjourned the meeting at 12:24 p.m.
