Dr. Garrick Askew presented a governance initiative that lists 12 themes the board could explore to improve cohesion and role clarity. The themes include role clarity, discipline, board norms, agenda development, legal compliance and ethics, public communications and social media governance, civility and conflict resolution, student outcomes and strategic monitoring, data literacy for governance, teacher and principal support alignment, talent strategy and workforce stability, and partnerships/procurement/fiscal stewardship.
Askew advised the board would first vote to commit to governance training and identify which themes to address; administration would then return with recommended trainers or facilitators. Mrs. Aurie Jenkins asked whether sessions would count toward the state-required annual hours; Askew said the board had already met the mandatory six hours at its retreat and that he would verify whether the proposed sessions could qualify for additional credit.
Trustees will determine whether to pursue the full list or a subset of themes and will later approve any trainer selection. No vote was taken at the work session.
