The Dothan City Schools Board of Education on Jan. 20 approved a package of policies intended to strengthen staffing, special education supports and technology governance.
The board unanimously adopted the Dothan City Schools Hiring and Retention Bonus Program and an Emergency Certified Teacher Development & Certification Pathway to improve teacher recruitment, certification and retention across the district. Trustees said the initiatives are designed to bolster instructional capacity amid ongoing staffing challenges.
Trustees also voted unanimously to approve a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) job description to permit planning and to comply with federal grant procedures. District staff said the BCBA position will be funded through Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) federal funds and that job descriptions must be uploaded into the state’s EGAP system before federal funds can be charged. Several trustees cautioned that a single BCBA will need supporting Registered Behavior Technicians and other paraprofessional supports to be effective; Mrs. Aurie Jenkins urged a broader staffing plan.
On technology policy, the board approved a Technology Administrative Procedure that updates the district’s Data Governance Policy and Acceptable Use Policy, introduces a District AI Policy, clarifies software adoption rules, and shifts from a strict risk-avoidance model to a risk-acceptance approach for content filtering aligned with instructional goals.
Board members said these policy changes aim to protect student data, support instructional innovation, and ensure clearer governance of digital tools. District staff will proceed with policy updates and implementation steps, including posting revised procedures and providing training for staff.
