Superintendent’s Spotlight highlights Carver’s statewide ranking and Highlands’ Bright Ideas grants

Karris Harmon, the district's new Public Relations Officer, introduced a regular "Superintendent's Spotlight" at the Nov. 18 meeting and used it to recognize high achievement and local innovation.
Superintendent and staff highlighted Carver School for Math, Science and Technology, noting U.S. News & World Report ranked it the No. 6 elementary school in Alabama; the board congratulated Carver staff and students for the recognition.
Highlands Elementary was spotlighted for launching the Bright Ideas Classroom Grant program. Principal Beth Bouchard and the Highlands PTO raised $1,000 from a school fundraiser and matched it with $1,000 from the PTO to create a $2,000 fund. Teachers submitted proposals for grants up to $500; four projects were selected, including a kindergarten family literacy initiative led by Mrs. Vickie Hogan ("Bingo for Books"), a 4th‑grade fractions project from Math Coach Kris Kitkowski and teacher Kristen Flageolle, a K–5 art & STEAM cardboard design project from art teacher Tara Harris, and a sensory‑space renovation for special education students led by special education teacher Megan Brezina.
The board also named Brisa Ramirez, an EL teacher, as Employee of the Month.
Karris Harmon said her goal is to celebrate stories of excellence and share district achievements via the Superintendent's Spotlight.
