The board introduced and congratulated the 2026 JV national champion cheer team and coach Shelly Summers; students introduced themselves and the board praised the commitment required to win a national championship.
The Vestavia Hills board took a moment at the Feb. 23 meeting to introduce and congratulate the 2026 JV national champion cheerleading team.
Superintendent introduced coach Shelly Summers, who described the difficulty of assembling teams each year as ninth‑ and tenth‑grade squads are combined from different feeder programs. Several students introduced themselves by name and grade and received applause from board members, who praised the athletes' character and the coach's leadership.
"I wanna shout out to Shelly over there because that, all this didn't just happen. That, she was able to coordinate and coach you guys, tremendously," the chair said during remarks recognizing the team.
The recognition was presented near the start of the meeting as part of a broader series of student‑focused acknowledgments; no board action was required.
