Angleton board adopts youth membership category for recreation center

The Angleton Better Living Corporation on Oct. 14 approved adding a youth membership category to the Angleton Recreation Center’s discount schedule to expand access for 12-to-17-year-olds.

Presenter (S3) described the new category as an individual youth membership priced at $25 annually for residents (down from the $35 resident adult rate) and $10 per month for the monthly option; nonresident discounts would be similar, with a $10 monthly or a $75 annual discount available if the board approves matching nonresident terms. Staff proposed verification using school identification; homeschooled children registered with the state could also qualify on submitted documentation, and parents must sign membership agreements for minors.

Board members suggested operational variations to increase uptake — for example, targeted promotions such as honor-roll incentives, month-to-month or shorter-term trial passes tied to progress-report weeks, and requiring a parent as emergency contact at sign-up. One member suggested that day-pass pricing could be reduced for the youth cohort to encourage use. Presenters noted the Rec Center generates significant program revenue and asked staff to consider cost-recovery impacts when finalizing pricing and promotions.

A motion to adopt the rec center’s recommended youth membership category was moved, seconded and approved by voice vote; the chair announced 'Motion carries' in the meeting record. Staff will implement the category and return with detailed instructions for enrollment and verification procedures as part of the Rec Center’s operating adjustments.
