Angleton council approves utility-rate increase to fund $8 million repairs to aging water and sewer plant

City staff recommended and the council approved an ordinance increasing utility base charges to accommodate a supplier cost increase and to fund repairs to the city ging water and sewer plant.
Staff said the BWA (supplier) increase of 36¢ translates to a 72¢ change in the city base for the 2,000-gallon base rate and that the city is adding $1 to the water base, $1 to the sewer base and $4.52 to the sewer rate to support an $8,000,000 bond intended to repair and replace parts of a more-than-50-year-old plant. Staff and council members noted that TCEQ enforcement and potential fines were additional drivers for acting now.
Mayor John Wright encouraged residents to attend a town hall on Thursday the 18th at 6:30 p.m. at the recreation center to hear details and to ask questions about the change. The ordinance passed on a council vote after the motion and second were recorded.
