Council approves overnight repair of aging main after emergency blowout; cost estimate ~$86,000

The Taylor City Council approved a consent‑agenda item on Jan. 8 authorizing an emergency repair of an aging transmission main that blew out in late December. City staff told council that the failure occurred on a 35‑year‑old section of the main and that crews will isolate the line and work overnight to make the repair.
"On December 24, our crews were called out for a leak ... that line is about 35 years old now," the city manager said, explaining that contractor Rangeline — a firm the city has used previously — will perform the repair starting at 10 p.m. Friday to allow staff to drop pressure at the main plant, isolate the section and excavate for pipe welding and concrete restoration.
The manager estimated the cost at roughly $86,000 but cautioned that crews may discover additional issues once they begin work that would raise the final bill.
Council action: Councilman Redden moved approval of the item; Councilwoman Long seconded the motion and council voted 'aye.' City staff said the city can isolate the affected section and restore service once repairs are complete.
Impact: Staff said the repair will temporarily drop pressure while valves at the main plant are closed and restored afterward. Staff emphasized they will coordinate timing to minimize customer impacts and complete the weld and backfill work as quickly as possible.
Next steps: Crews will proceed with the repair and report back if additional complications or cost changes arise.
