The Lemon Grove School District Governing Board voted against hiring Leadership Associates to conduct the district’s superintendent search during its regular meeting on Nov. 14, 2023. Dr. Javier Ayala moved to approve the search-firm contract; Dorinda Miller seconded. The motion failed 2–2, with Ayala and Miller voting yea and Yajaira Preciado and Cheryl Robertson voting nay.
The vote was the only formal action on the superintendent search at the meeting; the board had earlier adjourned to closed session and reported no action taken there. The motion to hire Leadership Associates was recorded as a formal motion and counted as a defeated action under the meeting’s action items.
Board members did not record additional public discussion or a substitute motion to select an alternate consultant during the open session. Later in the same meeting the board adopted a procedure and timeline to fill the current vacant board seat by provisional appointment, a separate action that could affect the timeline for a superintendent search or recruitment steps.
The board resumed open session at 6:43 p.m. and adjourned the meeting at 8:25 p.m.
