The Lemon Grove School District Governing Board appointed Jasmin Smith to its Board of Education at a special meeting on Tuesday, Dec. 19, 2023, after two earlier nomination attempts failed for lack of a second.
The appointment came after Board member Cheryl Robertson moved to nominate Jasmin Smith and Board Clerk Yajaira Preciado seconded the motion. The board recorded a unanimous affirmative vote by the four members listed as present: Dr. Javier Ayala, Dorinda Miller, Yajaira Preciado and Cheryl Robertson.
Earlier in the meeting, Robertson had moved to appoint Reverend Daniel Scott Brunner, Sr.; that motion received no second and failed. A subsequent motion by Preciado to appoint John Burns likewise received no second and failed. The record shows the first two motions failed solely because no board member seconded them.
Following the successful vote, Interim Superintendent Marianna Vinson administered the oath of office to Jasmin Smith, who filled the vacancy on the board. The meeting agenda also listed a public-comment period for the appointment item, naming Cynthia Jurado, Michelle Krug and Jennifer Mendoza as speakers; the official record includes their names but does not transcribe their remarks.
The board approved the meeting agenda at the start of the session. The special meeting adjourned at 7:26 p.m.
