Council approves sole-source vendor, repairs and amenities funding for city pool

Assistant Recreation Director Carol Stiles told council the City Pool — built in the early 1960s and replastered in 1984 — must meet the Virginia Graham Baker (VGB) federal safety standards for pool drains. Stiles said the county health department notified staff that existing drains would not comply, and that Aqua Management Partners/PurAqua manufactures the compliant parts and provides specialized services. Staff asked council to approve sole-source procurement and to appropriate funds from fund balance for repairs; council approved both items, with Council Member Jon McClure recorded as voting against both resolutions.
Council discussed the amenities budget, described by Stiles as approximately $60,000, and Council Member Jody Dixon commented that if the city 'is in the pool business' it should have high-quality amenities. The motions were approved and the city will proceed with procurement and repairs to meet state and federal safety requirements.
