Newton Council adopts FY2024-25 budget with two dissenting votes

Resident Annie Elizabeth Sifford asked whether increases discussed were for 2024; Hovis clarified they were for the upcoming fiscal year and confirmed staff had proposed increases to 401(k) contributions in addition to merit and cost-of-living adjustments. The mayor told residents that council members would not receive raises.
The council did not provide additional programmatic funding for daytime Central Recreation staffing at the meeting; residents and council members noted ongoing interest in programming. The ordinance was adopted and is on file with the city clerk.
