Nelson County Commission approves 2024 budget amendments, authorizes contracts and makes water board appointments

The Nelson County Commission on Jan. 7 unanimously approved amendments to the county’s 2024 budget, amended the assistant State's Attorney contract with Yunker Law Firm to $72,000 annually and signed several contracts including Department of Transportation bridge replacement contracts and Vanguard Appraisals agreements.
Commissioner Cameron Swenson moved to approve the Dec. 17 meeting minutes as amended; Commissioner Mike Haugland seconded and all members voted yes. The commission then approved the amended agenda after adding items for the State's Attorney, contracts, the Water Board and a holiday policy.
State's Attorney Jayme Tenneson and Assistant State's Attorney Jack Yunker outlined plans for how the office will be organized in 2025. The commission voted to amend the assistant State's Attorney contract with Yunker Law Firm to an annual cost of $72,000 (moved by Commissioner Aaron Mork; seconded by Commissioner Mike Haugland; roll call: all yes).
Michelle Linstad, the county tax director, presented the Tax Director budget and presented contracts with Vanguard Appraisals; the commission approved signing the Vanguard contracts (moved by Commissioner Cameron Swenson; seconded by Commissioner Aaron Mork; unanimous vote). Curt Loe, highway superintendent, and other department heads reviewed Road & Bridge, Weed Control, Clerk of Court & Recorder, Emergency Management, Superintendent of Schools and Sheriff budgets during the meeting.
Auditor Nathan Parks presented overall 2024 budget amendments; the commission approved the amendments on a roll call vote after discussion (moved by Commissioner Cameron Swenson; seconded by Commissioner Aaron Mork; all yes). Chairman Cody Johnson reviewed Department of Transportation contracts for a bridge replacement received via DocuSign; the commission voted to sign those DOT contracts (moved by Commissioner Aaron Mork; seconded by Commissioner Doug Flaagan; unanimous).
The commission discussed Nelson County’s holiday policy and an executive order issued for Jan. 9, 2025, and directed staff to follow the county policy for holiday closures. The body also appointed Josh Forde to the Nelson County Water Board (moved by Commissioner Aaron Mork; seconded by Commissioner Cameron Swenson; unanimous) and appointed Ben Varnson as an alternate (moved by Commissioner Cameron Swenson; seconded by Commissioner Aaron Mork; unanimous).
Commissioner Cameron Swenson moved to approve the bills as presented; Commissioner Aaron Mork seconded and the commission voted unanimously to approve them. With no further business the commission adjourned the meeting.
