Nelson County accepts culvert and gravel bids, reviews township cost-share proposal

Nelson County commissioners opened and accepted bids for culverts and gravel during the April 6 meeting and discussed the county’s 50/50 cost-share policy with townships for county road work.
At 10:30 a.m. the board opened culvert bids from TrueNorth Steel and Tom Gilbertson; commissioners voted unanimously to accept all culvert bids. At 10:45 a.m. gravel bids were opened from Tom Gilbertson & Sons, Don Dvorak Gravel Inc., Close Construction and Gowan Construction; the board again voted to accept all gravel bids.
After the bid openings, contractor-attendees and citizens joined the meeting. The board discussed the county’s existing policy under which the county and townships each pay 50% for graveling, culvert replacement or maintenance, washout repairs and crack sealing. David Steffan proposed lowering the townships’ share to 25%. Commissioners examined past township payments and mileage of county roads in each township but noted that 2022 budgets are already set; the board said it will continue to review the cost-share arrangement.
All bid acceptance motions passed unanimously. No formal change to the cost-share formula was adopted at the meeting; discussion was left open for future consideration.
