Nelson County approves shared wellness agent, raises mileage rate and reappoints weed board members

The Nelson County Commission took several administrative actions at its July 7, 2022 meeting, approving a shared Family and Community Wellness (FCW) agent with Steele County, increasing the employee mileage reimbursement, reappointing two members to the county Weed Board and hearing presentations on law‑enforcement activity and the county annual report.
Leslie Lubenow of NDSU Extension told the commission Steele County had offered to share a FCW agent on a 50/50 full‑time equivalent basis. Under the approved arrangement, Nelson County will pay 25% of the FCW salary, Steele County will pay 25%, and NDSU will cover the remaining 50% plus benefits. Commissioner Steve Forde moved to approve the sharing agreement; Commissioner Maynard Loibl seconded and the motion passed on a roll‑call vote.
Auditor Jenny Wigen noted the federal GSA mileage reimbursement rate rose from 58.5 to 62.5 cents per mile. Commissioner Don Fougner moved, and Commissioner Maynard Loibl seconded, to increase Nelson County employees’ mileage reimbursement to 62.5 cents; the commission voted unanimously in favor.
Seth Hamre reported two county roads remained closed as of July 7 and said he purchased two 2005 Mack trucks from an NDDOT sale for the Nelson County Highway Department. Hamre also said the department’s backhoe is very old and the county should consider replacing it rather than investing further in repairs.
The commission reappointed Mark Landeis and Seth Hamre to the Nelson County Weed Board after a motion from Commissioner Don Fougner, seconded by Commissioner Maynard Loibl; the motion carried unanimously.
Keith Olson presented the sheriff’s office Calls for Service report for June, saying there were 215 calls that month, and introduced Daniel Diaz as a new deputy who began with the sheriff’s department on June 7.
Peggy Hoel of the Lake Region Law Enforcement Center presented the center’s proposed 2023 budget for Devils Lake. After the presentation the board, on a motion from Commissioner Cody Johnson seconded by Commissioner Maynard Loibl, voted to pay all bills as listed.
Michelle Linstad presented the 2022 Nelson County Annual Report to the commission. Chairman Nancy Marquart also asked that the county request financial reports from the Nelson County Water Board twice per year for commissioners’ review. The board adjourned with no further business recorded.
