Fremont County approves operational moves: one hire contingent on grant, mechanic rehired, vehicle repairs and fair staffing changes

The Fremont County Commission approved a series of personnel and operational actions at its March 3 meeting, including hiring one Victim Witness position contingent on grant funding, rehiring a mechanic for vehicle maintenance, awarding vehicle repair contracts and approving fair-staff reorganizations.
County Attorney Micah Wyatt asked the commission to pre-approve a third position for the Victim Witness Department to address rising caseloads. Commissioners approved the hire contingent on successful grant funding; the county’s share was set at $26,523. The position is scheduled to begin July 1, 2026 if grant funds are secured; commissioners clarified that if the grant is unsuccessful, the position will not be filled. A separate request for a one-time payment to an existing employee for extra responsibilities was tabled pending further review.
Vehicle Maintenance Superintendent Jared Hall received approval to rehire a full-time Level 1 journeyman mechanic at a salary range of $50,500–$52,500. The commission approved purchasing a replacement door panel from Mr. R’s Salvage for $1,000 and accepted Fender Mender Body Shop bids for repairs ($4,126.56 and $1,405.00), to be paid from the appropriate budgets. The board also accepted a low-cost sale of a surplus county vehicle to the Dubois Rural Fire District for $1,000.
Fair Board Chairman Trevor Bekken introduced interim Fair Director Laura Harrington; the board approved rehiring a full-time Grounds and Maintenance position for the Fair Annex by a 3-2 vote (Michael Jones, Clarence Thomas, and Larry Allen in favor; Jennifer Wilson and Ron Fabrizius opposed). Commissioners also approved advertising for a Board of Equalization hearing examiner and a major property lease advertisement.
Several routine purchases and vendor payments were approved as part of the meeting’s consent and signature-file items. Commissioners adjourned at 1:00 p.m. and scheduled a reconvened meeting for March 10, 2026.
