The Lemon Grove School District Governing Board on Aug. 10 approved a structured interview and appointment process to fill a current vacancy on the board.
Trustee Cheryl Robertson moved to adopt a candidate process that limits opening statements to two minutes, allows each board member to ask two questions per candidate, and requires the board to rank candidates from top to bottom following interviews. Trustee Greg Shibley seconded the motion; it passed unanimously.
Following that motion the board also voted to use rank-choice voting in the appointment process. Trustee Cheryl Robertson moved adoption of rank-choice voting and Trustee Timothy Shaw seconded; the motion carried with all trustees voting yea. The board had earlier voted to interview all three applicants for the vacancy (motion moved by Trustee Timothy Shaw and seconded by Trustee Greg Shibley).
The board directed the Board Office to schedule interviews under the new rules. No appointment outcome was recorded at the Aug. 10 meeting; the adopted process establishes how the board will conduct candidate opening statements, questioning and the subsequent ranking and tallying to select an appointee.
