Lemon Grove board appoints HR director and elementary principal, adopts calendars and district policies

At its Aug. 10, 2021 meeting the Lemon Grove School District board unanimously appointed Tomas Chavez as Executive Director of Human Resources and Rosaland Turner as principal of Mount Vernon Elementary, approved revised 2021–22 calendars and several district policies and contracts.
The Lemon Grove School District Governing Board on Aug. 10, 2021 returned from closed session and unanimously approved a slate of personnel appointments, calendar revisions and policy updates.
The board reported two appointments made in closed session. Trustee Cheryl Robertson moved to appoint Tomas Chavez to the position of Executive Director, Human Resources; Trustee Yajaira Preciado seconded the motion, which carried with all four trustees voting yea. The board also appointed Rosaland Turner to be principal at Mount Vernon Elementary; Trustee Greg Shibley moved the appointment and Trustee Yajaira Preciado seconded, and the motion carried unanimously.
In public session the board approved revised certificated and classified 2021–2022 calendars. Trustee Timothy Shaw moved the calendar approval; Trustee Yajaira Preciado seconded and the motion carried unanimously.
The board approved several district personnel and program items by unanimous votes: adoption of a confidential salary schedule (moved by Trustee Yajaira Preciado; seconded by Trustee Greg Shibley), updates to the Title I Parent Involvement Policy adding a parent-and-student signing requirement and consistent documents across schools (moved by Trustee Timothy Shaw; seconded by Trustee Yajaira Preciado), and authorization of AKA Head Start service agreements and related contract renewals (moved by Trustee Yajaira Preciado; seconded by Trustee Greg Shibley). The board also approved an updated independent study board policy (moved by Trustee Greg Shibley; seconded by Trustee Yajaira Preciado).
Trustees additionally voted to interview all three candidates who applied to fill a current vacancy on the Lemon Grove School District Board of Education; the board later set rules for the interview and appointment process (see separate coverage).
The consent agenda — including meeting minutes from June 15, 2021; personnel action report; ratification of multiple contracts; notice(s) of completion for HVAC and security window-shade projects; purchase orders and a flooring change order by DFS Flooring — was approved by motion of Trustee Timothy Shaw with a second from Trustee Greg Shibley. The meeting adjourned at 8:00 PM.
The board received, as an information item, an overview of COVID-19 precautions planned for the 2021–22 school year; no formal action on health protocols was recorded at the Aug. 10 meeting.
