Newton City Council unanimously adopted a resolution on Aug. 1 to waive the $1 general admission fee for the city splash pad for the remainder of 2023, excluding rental fees, and to make the waiver retroactive to July 13, 2023.
City Manager Sean Hovis said council members had expressed a desire to waive the $1 general admission fee; the waiver does not apply to rental charges for exclusive use of the splash pad. Council Member Roy Johnson moved adoption of the resolution and Council Member Jody Dixon seconded; the motion carried unanimously.
The fee waiver was approved alongside routine consent-agenda items and a set of budget and grant ordinances referenced on file with the city clerk. During public comment, resident Michael McRee raised concerns about a 26% property tax increase and neighborhood maintenance; council did not take substantive action in response during this meeting.
Council adjourned after receiving standard department updates and council reports.
