Newton Council approves Project Coordinator and Communications Specialist positions

The Newton City Council on Jan. 10 approved two new staff positions aimed at supporting capital projects and expanding the city's communications capacity.
Public Works and Utilities Director Dusty Wentz asked the council to create an additional Project Coordinator position to oversee multiple construction and utility projects planned for the fiscal year, including an E. 5th Street culvert repair, MetroNet fiber installation, the 15th Street sewer embankment project, Overlook Drive water-main replacement, the wastewater treatment plant replacement and the proposed relocation of the Hwy 10 substation. Staff requested a FY2023 personnel budget amendment of $40,550 to cover the position; the council voted unanimously to create the position and approve the amendment.
Separately, Public Information Officer Alex Frick proposed a Communications Specialist position to support the city's communications, branding and social media efforts, emphasizing graphic design and digital content creation. The estimated FY2023 personnel cost of $30,800 was presented; the council approved creation of the role and the corresponding budget amendment unanimously.
Both positions were presented as responses to rising project workloads and a strategic focus on communications. Council member votes were recorded as unanimous; staff will proceed with recruitment and budgetary adjustments as required.
