The Newton City Council on Sept. 5 approved two routine rezoning requests and a budget housekeeping item.
Assistant Planning Director Alex Fulbright presented Rowe Estates, an ~11.7‑acre rezoning from EM‑1 to PD‑H to allow 58 detached single‑family homes; the Planning Commission recommended approval and no public speakers appeared. Council voted unanimously to approve. Fulbright also presented a rezoning request at 1150 Sunset St to change a 0.2‑acre portion from R‑20 to R‑9 to allow a duplex; the Planning Commission recommended approval and council approved unanimously.
City Manager Sean Hovis reported that as of June 30, 2023 the city had $3,997,387 in outstanding purchase orders that should be carried forward into FY2024 under normal Governmental Accounting Standards procedures to reflect legal obligations. Council adopted the budget ordinance to reinstate those purchase orders in the FY2024 budget.
