Newton Council approves sewer agreement with Catawba County to support economic development

The Newton City Council unanimously approved an agreement with Catawba County on Dec. 6 to extend sewer along Highway 10 to the Highway 16 extension to support economic development.
City Manager Jonathan Franklin told the council the City has worked with Catawba County since July 2022 as part of discussions related to attracting Microsoft to the county. Franklin said Catawba County offered $910,000 toward a water or sewer infrastructure project to foster economic development, and the agreement outlines the use of those funds for the Highway 10/16 sewer expansion.
The council’s approval authorizes the City to proceed with the sewer line expansion project as described in the intergovernmental agreement. The motion to approve was made by Mayor Pro Tem John Stiver and seconded by Council Member Ed Sain; the council voted unanimously.
