After public hearing, Fillmore County commissioners decline to adopt shotgun-only hunting ordinance

Fillmore County held a public hearing March 3, 2026, on a proposed shotgun-only ordinance that would limit the type of firearms used to hunt deer under Minnesota Statute 2024, section 97B.318. Administrator Bobbie Hillery opened the presentation with an overview of the statute and the county's authority to adopt such an ordinance.
Chair Randy Dahl opened the floor to citizen comments at 10:03 a.m. Citizens were permitted to speak in person and the administrator read letters submitted by residents. The public comment period ran until 11:12 a.m., after which the board recessed and resumed at 11:27 a.m. Following additional discussion among commissioners, Commissioner Marc Prestby moved and Commissioner Mitch Lentz seconded a motion not to adopt the shotgun-only ordinance. The motion carried unanimously.
