Morton County commissioners approve abatements, appointments and travel authorization

The Morton County Commission on Feb. 24, 2026, approved a slate of routine actions during its regular meeting at the Morton County Courthouse in Mandan, including a $730,900 property tax abatement, two additional abatements, authorization for out‑of‑state travel for the county Veterans Service Officer and two board appointments.
The meeting opened at 5:30 p.m. with Chairman Nathan Boehm presiding. Commissioners Buckley and Morrell, County Auditor Dawn R. Rhone, Sheriff Kirchmeier and State's Attorney Koppy were present; Commissioners Zachmeier and Tokach were absent.
Commissioner Morrell moved and Commissioner Buckley seconded to approve the meeting agenda; the motion carried with all voting aye. The commission likewise approved the Feb. 12, 2026 minutes, county bills and payroll on motions by Morrell that Buckley seconded; each motion carried with all voting aye.
The commission approved out‑of‑state travel for Veterans Service Officer (VSO) Erhart to attend the NACVSO conference in Reno, Nevada, May 30–June 6, 2026 (motion by Morrell; second by Buckley; all voting aye).
In a financial action, the commission approved abatement #7178 for 2025 in the amount of $730,900 to cover the combined value of a shop and house on a single parcel; the abatement was recommended by the county tax assessor. The body also approved abatements #7185 and #7186 on a subsequent motion (all voting aye).
On appointments, Commissioner Buckley moved and Commissioner Morrell seconded to appoint Jeff Lind to the School Reorganization Board for a term expiring June 30, 2028; the motion carried with all voting aye. The commission also appointed Kristi Kreanzel as the extraterritorial representative to the Hebron Planning & Zoning Board on a motion by Morrell and second by Buckley (all voting aye).
The public comment period opened at 6:32 p.m. and produced no comments; it closed at 6:33 p.m. The commission recorded total county funds expended from Feb. 13–24, 2026 as $1,178,218.17 and noted that a detailed list of expenditures by check is available for public inspection during regular business hours at the Morton County Auditor’s Office.
Commissioner Morrell moved and Commissioner Buckley seconded to adjourn; the meeting ended at 6:34 p.m.
