The Mackinac County Board of Commissioners on July 11 approved placing a newly hired Deputy Administrative Clerk at pay grade 5, step 3, at an hourly rate of $21.25.
Clerk Hillary Vowell initially requested that the new hire be placed at pay grade 5, step 3 under the union contract allowance to start at step 3. Commissioners asked to review a job description before deciding. After the board voted to revisit the request and Clerk Vowell provided the applicant's resume and the job description, the board approved the pay placement by unanimous roll call.
Earlier in the meeting an initial motion to approve the request failed (Roll Call: Yes — Litzner, Patrick; No — Clark, Kaiser, St. Louis-Scott). Following the revisit and submission of qualifications, the board voted 5-0 to approve the requested pay step.
The minutes record the approved pay rate as $21.25 per hour and note that the move to step 3 is permitted under the applicable union contract for a new employee. Commissioners asked that job descriptions and qualifications be provided when similar requests are made in the future.
What happens next: the county will implement the approved pay placement for the new hire; the minutes do not record the employee's name or start date.
