Moody Council recognizes retiring police chief, appoints replacement and clears routine business

The Moody City Council on March 13 recognized Police Chief Thomas Hunt on his retirement effective March 31 and voted to appoint Captain Reese Smith as Chief of Police effective April 1, 2023. Mayor Joe Lee presided over the recognition and the council adopted Resolution R2023-03-13A to formalize the appointment; the motion was made by Council Member Matt Morris, seconded by Council Member Nick Rutledge, and passed unanimously.
During department reports and agenda actions the council approved a series of routine items: a valve rebuild on fire unit E-2 at a cost of $911.20; authorization for the fire chief to attend the Summer Fire Chiefs Conference not to exceed $2,000; payment of $5,015 for annual police ammunition purchases; acceptance of the city audit for the fiscal year ended Sept. 30, 2022; surplus of two vehicles (a 2006 Ford Expedition and a 2008 Honda Pilot); and approval of a $2,500 cap for library summer-read performers and supplies. Most motions were moved and seconded by council members and passed by unanimous vote, except where the minutes note individual abstentions or a single dissent on separate items.
Council also approved a partnership with St. Clair County to repair and pave Ebenezer Road at a cost of $18,000 to each jurisdiction (city portion to be funded with RAA gas tax funds); authorized Melissa Fraser to attend Alabama Municipal Revenue Officer training in Tuscaloosa (costs budgeted); approved an upgrade to the city's accounting software (Local Government Nextgen) for $10,808.25; and adopted an updated multi-jurisdictional hazard mitigation plan under Resolution R2023-03-13.
The council motion to close the meeting was made by Mayor Lee at 6:23 p.m.; the minutes record no further business.
