City Council unanimously approved a budget ordinance amendment and an agreement with Catawba County on Nov. 1 to replace the Fire Department’s outdated water‑rescue equipment.
Deputy Fire Chief Brian Whitener told the council Newton is certified in Surface Water Rescue and Swift Water Rescue but that the current equipment is obsolete. The replacement package includes two boats, two rafts, motors, a trailer and 16 water‑rescue protective suits plus 16 personal flotation vests. Whitener said Catawba County will reimburse Newton for the purchase; the estimated cost in meeting materials is $113,403.53.
Council members discussed the public‑safety benefits of new equipment and moved, seconded and approved the budget amendment and the county agreement unanimously. The agreement and the itemized equipment list are on file in the City Clerk’s office.
Next steps: staff will proceed with purchase and coordinate reimbursement with Catawba County per the approved agreement.
