City manager reports progress on sewer, roof, paving and compost projects; flags maintenance staffing shortfall

Interim City Manager Sean Hovis updated the council on several public-works projects and operational matters at the April 5 meeting.
On the West A Street sewer project, the contractor installed a manhole behind the BB&T building and the intersection of A Street and Ashe Avenue will remain closed for about two weeks. At the Public Works and Utilities facility, contractors are installing TPO roofing material and the roof project is reported as roughly 95% complete. The contractor plans to begin the West 23rd Street asphalt replacement during the week of April 10–16.
Hovis told the council that mowing and spraying operations have fallen behind because of a shortage of staff. He also said compost loading at Boston Road will start Thursday and will be available Thursday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the compost is gone. He closed by listing upcoming budget workshop dates: May 9, 10 and 11, each beginning at 5:15 p.m.
Mayor Pro Tem John Stiver later reported on the Tree Board and on ElectriCities during the council’s questions and comments period. No council action was required on the project updates; the items were informational.
