Newton City Council authorized the city manager to complete purchase of a Catawba County‑owned building at 2713 N. College Ave. and adopted a related budget‑ordinance amendment to prepare the site for municipal use.
City Manager Jonathan Franklin told council the Board of Commissioners authorized sale of the property to the city for $49,240, the amount owed on the building. Franklin said staff requested an estimated $75,000 to clean, repair and pave the site, and that the city plans to move the burn trailer currently stored on another lot to the new location and to stage a spare fire truck and response trailers there.
Council Member Ed Sain moved approval of the purchase contract; Council Member Roy Johnson seconded. The council voted unanimously to approve the purchase and to adopt the accompanying budget amendment.
The motion authorized the city manager to execute the contract for the property identified by PIN 374113143339. Staff plans site preparations after closing and will report back to council as work and costs are finalized.
