Mayor Aaron Brown read a proclamation at the Sept. 16 Forest Park City Council meeting declaring September 2024 as Suicide Prevention Month and presented it to representatives of NAMI Southwest Ohio.
Angel Curry, community outreach manager for NAMI Southwest Ohio, thanked the city and cited national data to emphasize the issue’s scale: "Did you know that suicide is the eleventh leading cause of death in America?" she said, adding that in 2022 "49,476 Americans lost their lives to suicide." Curry called for community awareness, reduced stigma and for residents to know help is available.
The mayor and council thanked NAMI for its work and encouraged residents to participate in awareness and prevention activities. No formal action was required; the proclamation was ceremonial recognition and part of the council's presentations.
