Library director reports progress on Farmington branch construction, Twig temporary branch sees strong early use

On the Farmington project, staff reported a fence is in place around the building and asbestos removal is underway. The team plans to submit for the contractor’s permit on April 2, move the CM/GC subcontract bidding process into April and May, and begin construction in May; staff estimated the build will take about a year. "The asbestos removal team's been in there. They should take about a month," a staff member said, and the board discussed permitting and budget implications.
Staff also described salvaging legacy children's tiles from the previous building and placing them in a book at the Twig for patrons to review and claim; approximately nine tiles were recovered and will be available for pickup at the Twig. The board discussed how to handle unclaimed tiles and possible ways to incorporate a commemorative element in the new building.
The Twig temporary branch opened to the public recently and staff reported healthy early traffic: daily patron counts have exceeded 100, with about 140 visitors on the first day. Staff plan to resume story time next week and restart additional regular programs on April 1. Johnson said staff are exploring outreach at Main Street events and a limited-edition bag giveaway for the first 150 families at the grand-opening event noted in the meeting.
Staff also reviewed options for additional temporary sites: the Bountiful off-site location lease runs through the end of quarter four 2027 with options to change timing, and a possible North Salt Lake temporary site of roughly 1,000 square feet is under consideration; staffing and facility department workloads make firm decisions unlikely before June.
The board praised staff work on making temporary services available and on pre-construction planning. The meeting adjourned at 1:47 p.m.
