Houghton County to review resolution limiting county role in civil immigration enforcement after public support

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners reviewed a draft resolution on March 2 that would protect equal access to public services and restrict use of county property for civil immigration enforcement.
Katie LaCosse presented the draft and urged the Board to place it on a meeting agenda. Several members of the public — Valorie Troesch, Heather Mrosz, Sara Green, Craig Waddell, Eve Johnson and Joan Chaudde — told the Board they supported the proposed measure during the meeting’s public-comment period. Chairman Tom Tikkanen read portions of the proposed resolution aloud and asked for information about the sponsoring group, Keweenaw Indivisible; a member described the group as a local, nonpartisan community organization.
Commissioner Roy Britz said he had concerns with the draft and told colleagues he did not feel the Board could direct the sheriff. Board members asked staff for copies of any resolutions Keweenaw Indivisible has already adopted and agreed to move the item to the April agenda for further review and legal consideration.
The Board did not take formal action on the resolution at the work session. No ordinance or policy was adopted; the item will return for additional drafting and review before any vote.
