Members of Sioux County United Taxpayers and other residents attended the July 1 special meeting to question a proposed roughly 25% increase to the sheriff and jail budget. Commissioners listened as citizens pressed Sheriff McCumbers for justification for adding four full‑time positions plus one part‑time role.
Sheriff McCumbers told the board he had logged 172 incidents so far this year and anticipated an average of about two incidents per day for the calendar year; he said many calls involved petty vandalism, trespassing and theft, along with domestic and child‑abuse cases. The sheriff stated roughly half of calls were prosecutable and that the State Patrol lacked manpower to help with investigations in the county.
Residents requested more transparency, including a call log published in the local paper; one attendee said the newspaper is the best communication channel and said a call log had been requested previously. Sheriff McCumbers said he contacted the paper but had not received follow‑up. County Attorney Adam Edmund advised that patrolling on state highways is discretionary.
Commissioner J.W. Geiser noted that budget review would continue at a July 21 budget workshop. The minutes record the public exchange but do not show a formal vote on the sheriff’s budget increase at that meeting.
The minutes reflect public concern about adding personnel while local agricultural conditions and a drought worry some taxpayers; the board set budget review dates to continue discussions and evaluate staffing needs before final budget adoption.
